Office space needs post-virus

As we begin to see the fade of what seemingly looked like the peak of the coronavirus crisis, we are starting to understand what the aftermath will entail and the potential changes it will bring. Arguably, this somewhat different crisis was a real eye-opener for businesses. Those already prepared to shift to a remote office environment were among the fortunate ones. Many were forced to embark upon these changes dismissively put-off in the past.

The question remains however, on whether businesses will continue to leverage upon this new work lifestyle. Of course, it is apparent that from a financial standpoint that working from home simply makes sense. Potentially, once businesses are up and running, the requirement of adequate spacing within Company premises will remain. Therefore, the typical close cubicle office environment may be a thing of the past. A large spacing requirement means larger premises for Company – meaning a substantial increase in costs.

Certainly, the first advocates for an increase in flexibility to work from home are the Company’s employees. Not only do most employees strive for a greater work-life balance, but they’ll also be able to save an extra euro. People working from home are able so save on small costs, that add up to a large sum at the end of the month. Furthermore, remote working presents the opportunity to work with overseas Companies, something that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. Other benefits could include subsidised Wi-Fi and equipment such as work phones and laptops.

Consequentially, Companies will have access a greater pool of specialised staff at lower hiring costs, operating costs and business continuity costs in the likely event of a second wave of such a crisis.

It should be noted that life post-corona is unlikely to ever be the same. Social distancing is likely to become the new norm and it is vital that businesses prepare as always, the sooner the better.
